In todays high tech world it could assumed that new inventions in the medical field will be the result of millions of dollars of research and high tech equipment. One of the contestants in this years Medical Futures Innovation Awards is demonstrating that duct tape and a bit of lateral thinking can lead to a significant reduction in brain damage arising from heart attack.
Oxygen depravation to the brain is a major problem in heart attack victims. Mark Wilson, an anaesthetist from East Surrey Hospital, has built what he calls a "Shock Sheet" from a blow up car cover held together with duct tape.The Shock Sheet increases pressure on the legs to force blood to the brain.
With a predicted cost of 10 pounds, he is hoping that it will become a standard part of the toolset of ambulance officers and emergency departments.
