Eucalyptus Regnans King Of Trees

Mountain AshThe issue of which posts will turn out to be popular is a complete mystery to The Green Man. Some are easy to predict, the Spencer Tunick posts always generate some good attention but nudity will do that for you won't it.

One seemingly innocuous post that continues to get hits and comments is this one on the killing of the worlds tallest hardwood tree in Tasmania. You can read more about the tree in question, known as El Grande, on the Wilderness Society site.

Those who frequent the Victorian or Tasmania wilderness areas will know that the tree was a Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus Regnans). It's specific name being derived from the Latin "regnum - to rule". These are truely regal trees that rule over the Victorian/Tasmanian bush, the one in pictured right standing 330 feet.

Visit the original post to read some interesting personal comments left by Walter Savige on his families experiences with these magnificent trees.

It seems that few can experience these giants without being in awe. Experience them for yourself next time you are in Victoria by taking a drive up the Maroondah Valley and over the Black Spur. You can get some perspective on their size from the car in the photo to the left.

great website! im a real fan of tall structures in general but absalutley love tall trees. ive gone around the Sydney metro area with my "inclometre" to measure the tallest tree in Sydney. The tallest in the CBD is the Norfolk island pines. The tallest 20m north of Museum Station rises to 36m/120ft. the tallest in could find in metro Sydney range to 40m.
In the description above for the two gum trees you mention are 330ft. There actually closer to 300ft. The tallest in Australia is the "Mount Tree" in the Styx valley at 315ft/96m.there is one more 300footer on the mainland in Victoria located in Wallaby Creek. It measures 91.5m.or 301ft.
cheers

hi!

The debate continues...

what you have not mentioned is where the E. regnans are (the Styx Valley, south of Hobart by an hour) and the fact that they are severely under threat from Forestry Tasmania...the killers of El Grande.

What I would like to tell you and your visitors is that there is a great chance of a Eucalyptus obliqua topping the regnans real soon...and again, they are under threat!

just last week I was with a group in Tasmania's Tarkine, a magnificent Wild Place in the North West of the state. We wrapped our arms around one of these giant E. obliquas and got a rough measurement of 18 metres diameter at breast height; it would be anyone's guess as to the height, but it's roughly 90 metres...

I know (and have visited) another 5 areas with these giants - "gum-topped stringybark" is their rather unfortunate common name - and they're ALLL unreserved!!!

Where can I get slides of E.regnans? I am at the University of California at Santa Cruz Arboretum. I am giving a talk on the massacre of eucalypts in Tasmania - I spent a week traveling around in November - but could not get into the Styx. I need slides - I have tried to down load pics from the internet without success. Can you point me in the right direction? Many thanks.
