The Green Man being a pagan icon himself and today being a day of such significance in the pagan year it is appropriate to dwell on things of stone and wood.
Everyone has heard of Stonehenge of course. It is the defining symbol of pagan Briton however,
although it is the most dramatic, it is just one of the giant pagan relics that dot the British country-side. We don't understand the full meaning of many of these sites but their presence defies our attempts to ignore our pagan past.
A mere 20 miles across the Salisbury Plane from Stonehenge lies the little township of Avebury. It has been constructed within one of the largest stone circles in England. The ring is 26 acres in area.
Stone circles appear throughout Briton stretching as far north as the Orkneys at the top of Scotland. Here is a photo of Ring O Brodgar

Made somewhat famous by Billy Connolly dancing naked around it in excellent TV series "Billy Connolly's World Tour of Scotland". The ring itself is in the distance with the "Comet Stone" in the foreground. This stone is on a raised mound and is thought to have formed part of a processional entrance to the ring itself. The term "Comet Stone" is thought to be a corruption of "Cummistane" meaning mound stone in the ancient language of the area. This itself derives from the ancient Norse word of "Kumi" also meaning mound. Read more on Orkney's prehistory here.
